About the United States Society on Dams
The United States Society on Dams (USSD) is dedicated to advancing the role of dam and levee systems and building the community of practice. USSD is the preeminent society in the U.S. for more than 1,300 civil engineering professionals and 400 private companies and government agencies involved with all aspects of dams and levees. USSD is also the U.S. national committee of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), reaching nearly 100 national groups around the world.

Dams and Levees
Dams deliver critical water retention and control services that support multiple critical infrastructure sectors and industries, as well as provide community benefits. These include, but are not limited to:
• Hydroelectric power generation

• Sediment and flood control
• River navigation for inland bulk shipping
• Industrial waste management

In the United States, dams and levees are responsible for:
- Irrigating at least 10 percent of U.S. cropland
- Protecting more than 43 percent of the U.S population from flooding
- Generating about 60 percent of electricity in the Pacific Northwest
- Many more benefits that support the country’s public and economic welfare.

The official magazine of the USSD is published four times per year and is available in both print and online. The printed Bulletin is mailed to more than 1,600 USSD members with the digital version sent to almost 3,400 professionals within the dam and level industry. The Bulletin is publicly accessible to all who visit the USSD website.
